The St James’ Way runs through the county of La Garrotxa and visits en route a number of interesting sites.

The most popular and accessible section runs between Les Planes d’Hostoles and Els Hostalets d’en Bas and shares a route with the greenway that follows the old railway line from Olot to Girona and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Another of the St James’ ways follows the Via Ànnia, which originated in the county L’Empordà and followed the river Fluvià inland into La Garrotxa via Besalú, Castellfollit de la Roca and Sant Joan les Fonts.

One of the major cultural routes in Europe, the Way of Saint James, is signposted so that you can reach the main points of historic interest in the region on foot. It starts in Sant Pere de Rodes and connects with the Aragonese part of the Way of Saint James in Fraga, La Franja. A short yet interesting part of this route passes through La Garrotxa, along the El Carrilet greenway.

The part of the Way of Saint James that runs through La Garrotxa starts in Les Planes d’Hostoles and continues towards El Grau, through Sant Feliu de Pallerols and Sant Esteve d’en Bas.

To reach the town of Vic, the waymarking takes walkers on the climb from Els Hostalets d’en Bas to L’Hostal del Grau via Falgars, although another option is to follow the Itinerànnia markings and follow the old paved trail linking Olot and Vic, which still preserves its old cobbles and that leads directly to L’Hostal del Grau.

The Way of Saint James is marked with the blue signposting used throughout Europe, along with a representation of a scallop shell. Some parts of this route are also marked with the yellow arrows that indicate all the different stretches of the Way. These marks have been painted by the Friends of the Way of Saint James Association, but should not be confused with the markings of the Itinerànnia network (which are not as arrow-shaped).
